The Student Government Association (SGA) is the group that represents the student body and works to improve the quality of education for all.
The purpose of the SGA is to be the official representative voice of the student body’s interests, concerns, and needs on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs campus. The SGA acts as a liaison on behalf of the student body when dealing with college administration and other important matters. SGA will design and implement an informal system which will facilitate the collection, review and dissemination of data that is sensitive to the concerns, opinions, perceptions, and general interests of the student body.
Do these opportunities sound good yet? Trust us, the opportunities are endless and they just keep on getting better. This academic year (2011-2012) the SGA’s campus-wide collectively handled roughly around a million dollars in student activities fees. The Student Government Association on the St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus received the largest budget and was responsible for maintaining a grand total of $305,412. Although many SGA’s across the state of Florida have been dealing with large sums of money for the past couple of years, this was a first in St. Petersburg College history. Each SGA was tasked with developing a proposal process; this process would serve as guidelines for all proposal submissions. The respectable parties who received fund from the SGA included clubs, organizations, and departments. Through this process, students have been able to travel across the country, host events, and showcase their leadership skills throughout the state of Florida. The Student Government Association is also a great way to get involved on your campus. The Student Government Association on the St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus alone has funded many campus and college wide events. The St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus SGA has also funded St. Petersburg College’s first Radio Production Club, as well as the SPC Madrigalians’ trip to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York City.
The SGA’s main purpose is to help the student body, and to assist in helping to create a better campus life. The SGA Elections for the (2012-2012) St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus officers will be in April of 2012. The following positions are open: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and Legislative Liaison, and Public Relations Officer.
