Why study abroad?

“The City of Salamanca is an absolutely beautiful Mecca of Iberian culture, language, and life. I was astounded, the first day we arrived, by the beauty of the Gothic architecture, the history of a rich culture, the warmth of the people, the delectable food, and by the life-long friendships I made during my 3 weeks there.”  (Spenser Reed study abroad program 2011)

There are many scholastic reasons to travel abroad, including being fully immersed in a foreign language, but there are also many other reasons to travel abroad. Through St. Petersburg College’s study abroad program, students will travel to a country and be given the opportunity of a lifetime.  Besides a great statement on a student’s resume, the experience the student receives will be one of global educational value as well as a change to broaden his/her cultural awareness.

“Historically, study abroad programs involved a small percentage of American college students who would study for a summer, a semester, or a year, mostly in western countries.  Nowadays, students understand the importance of being prepared for a global society in which knowledge of languages and cultures is paramount to be successful in today’s increasingly competitive workplace.  ” (Roxana Levin, Spanish Professor)

SPC offers many scholarship opportunities to offset the cost of the Study Abroad programs. However, there is a $200.00 non-refundable application fee, so students who wish to participate should be positive that they can afford that along with the cost of travel, tuition, and lodging fees which are estimated on the school website.

“This trip helped me to understand others and even gain enough perspective to understand myself in ways I had never even thought existed.  I believe everyone should take the opportunity to travel and study abroad when the opportunity presents itself- because it will not come back sometimes, and if you get on board it WILL change your life completely to realize how blessed we are in our lives.” (Stephen Doherty Study Abroad 2011)
