The SPC women’s basketball team faced off against the HCC Hawks last week in their first game of the season. The Titans fought hard, but came up short in the end with a final score of 85-57.

The Hillsborough Hawks started strong, jumping out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter. However by halftime, SPC cut the lead to only 8 after a solid 23-point quarter. Freshman guard Jada Simons was the leading scorer with 12 points, gaining most of her points from the free throw line. Simons made 7 of her 10 free throw shots during her first game of the year. Freshman forward Shaquoira Miles also played a good game, getting a double-double after scoring 10 points and collecting 14 rebounds.

Sophomore point guard Myia Fletcher played well both offensively and defensively. Fletcher finished second in scoring with 11 points, as well as garnering two steals. Both teams had spirited support from their fans, with many visiting Hawks in the stands.

The Titans seemed to run out of steam in the second half though, as the Hawks forced the Titans into 27 turnovers through out the game. Head coach Denisha Davidson has a young team and plenty of time to make improvements. This first loss shouldn’t deter the Lady Titans from having a successful season.
