5 Years In The Sandbox – ‘Take A Risk And Share’

In November, the Sandbox celebrates 5 years.  It’s been a wild journey from a handful of online articles to multiple awards! We take a look back with some of our alumni reporters at what they got from the paper and what they see coming in the future in news.

When and how did you work on the Sandbox?

I have had several opportunities to write and share my work with the Sandbox since I started with St, Petersburg College and had Professor Kathy Bryson as my professor. She encouraged me to take a risk and write my feelings down and share my story. It didn’t matter it if was my experience with the PSTA bus system or sharing my poems.

What your most memorable takeaway from the experience?

I think my most memorable article would have to be the one I wrote about PSTA and I wanted to call it Segregation Back on the Bus. However, I think after the staff reviewed my article and others shared their input, it was a little modified. Since this was my first article with the paper, it really was my most memorable one. My favorite though would have to be the poem about “Largo Central Park.”

How does media – traditional and otherwise – fit in your future or current endeavors?

Having this chance and outlet to express myself and share it with others is an exciting experience. I love it, I love writing now! It has provided me another way to express myself in an artistic way. Living alone it makes it hard sometimes when you need to get feelings out and don’t have a sounding board or someone to bounce things off with, so I write.

What advice would you give a current or prospective Sandbox reporter?

My advice to current students or prospective students is try to get out of your comfort zone, expand your horizons, and try new things. Join a club, make new friends, and write and share your thoughts. There is someone out there that is really needing to hear that voice inside you. Let your voice be heard!
