Centennial Celebration
Arts & Entertainment, News & Politics September 18, 2012Heritage Village, Botanical Gardens, and the Florida Gulf Coast Center for Fishing & Interactive Museum (FGCCFIM) held a celebration to commemorate Pinellas County’s 100th anniversary. The event lasted from Saturday, September 15th to Sunday, September 17th. Hundreds attended the various activities provided, including a 5K run and 1 mile walk, archery, snow cone making, fish fry, book signing, fiber arts demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and more. The theme for this celebration was the county’s rich heritage; people dressed as they did in colonial times and showcased crafts related to that specific time period. Participating in the activities made one feel as though they had stepped back into time.
An excerpt from their brochure states that “On January 1, 1912 the county of Pinellas was created from the western, water-surrounded peninsula portion of Hillsborough County.” And can you guess what Pinellas County’s namesake is? “The name was derived from the numerous pine trees that covered the land.” The name suits this county very well, although since its induction, many of the trees have been cleared away, and the land built up into populace cities.
The Pinellas County Centennial Celebration was a fun, educational experience that families of all ages could enjoy.
