Movies and History Thrive at Local Park

Arts & Entertainment

by Katie Bishop, movie fan and practicing PR guru

This October, St. Petersburg Preservation will once again be hosting Movies in the Park at the beautiful North Straub Park. This series started three years ago and is held every October and May. It has been growing since its beginning because of the view, great live music, and the movies. There are also concessions available from a variety of vendors, but you are allowed to bring your own food and drink. If you take a look around this small park, you will see blankets covered with homemade goodies, and hear wine glasses clinking to toast a great evening in St Petersburg.

Movies in the Park starts on October 4th and runs every Thursday through the month at North Straub Park in Downtown St. Petersburg. The movies will include “American President” (October 4th), “The Big Sleep” (October 11th), “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (October 18th) and “Ghostbusters” (October 25th). Movies in the Park then returns every Thursday in May. The event begins at 6pm, but people are encourage to arrive a bit earlier, “to ensure a good seat although no seat is too far from the screen.” In addition, there are plenty of parking spaces in the area that are in walking distance of the park.

President of SPP Peter Belmont explains, “It is the perfect spot to enjoy an outdoor movie, a nice grassy area to sit in with a spectacular view over the St. Pete waterfront, and if that isn’t enough, before or after it is easy to walk to another great downtown business for more food, drink or entertainment.” Downtown St. Petersburg is home to some of the best restaurants, bars and shops in the bay area and is sure to have something for everyone.

The host of this free event is St. Petersburg Preservation, a local non-profit organization that is committed to preserving the city’s historic features and teaching people about the heritage and culture that has shaped it. SPP accepts donations at the Movies in the Park event, and all proceeds go towards preserving the rich history in St. Petersburg.

This event is sure to put smiles on faces young and old and will give you an experience that you will want to tell your friends about.
