Japanese Day at SPC

St. Petersburg college hosted an incredible open door event at its downtown campus Thursday, November 13, called Japanese Day. The event was being held in conjunction with the art work of the artists, which the school has had on display since  Nov. 1. The event also included a buffet of delicious types of sushi for the guests to try.

The first guest, Teshima, showed how to make a single stroke dragon painting. After he finished, his translator explained that his painting was meant to bring luck to everyone, which is why it was titled “Good Fortune.” The second guest, Sugita, showed the unique techniques of Japanese calligraphy. Sugita shared a  story about his youth of growing up in a temple, but later in life wanting to experience what it was like living poor.  His calligraphy was of the word  “wings” to show the strength that everyone has  in periods of hard times.

The event lasted no more than an hour, but was well worth the experience. If students find themselves at the downtown  campus before Dec. 15, they should stop by the artists’ displays on the second floor.
