A Sunny, Snowy Welcome Back at Clearwater Campus

SPC Programs & Events

On January 21st the Snow Queen did not visit Clearwater campus and leave a snowy blanket in the quad, and small children did not burst into chorus singing that song. Instead it was the very creative winter themed spring Welcome Back that brought snow to Clearwater campus for the first time since 1977.

Welcome Back events at each St. Petersburg College campus are put on at the beginning of each term to introduce students to campus organizations, and clubs. It is also an opportunity for new students to find out about resources like career and internship services, tutoring, and the library. Every campus approaches Welcome Back differently, but Clearwater campus is the most creative as befits the campus that home to the Crossroads gallery.

The Winter Wonderland Welcome Back (try saying that ten times fast) featured a pile of artificial snow, the mound was home to plenty of snowball fights during the event. There was also free food, an espresso bar, and a DJ spinning tunes that rang across the quad. Despite the snow, it was a perfect day to be outdoors after a gray and rainy first week back to school. Students made the most of it, with one group holding an picnic under the shade of a grand old oak in the courtyard. The volunteers at the booths were enjoying the cool but not cold weather and sunny skies.

Volunteers were smiling and ready to make conversation as this reporter made the rounds to document the event on camera. Among those present were Women on the Way’s Clearwater chapter who were interested in opportunities for their members at this newspaper. Phi Theta Kappa talked about their Facebook group, where they plan events and recognize the achievements of their members. The American Sign Language club, also known as the Silent Titans were demonstrating sign language. As the Welcome Back came to a close at 2 PM, students and faculty lingered as if they did not want the day to end.

This Welcome Back was covered live on our Instagram account, follow us for filtered photos and unfiltered photojournalism from on campus and around Tampa Bay.
