A practicing lawyer from the state of Virginia, Santorum obtained a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburg and a J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law. Santorum married his wife Karen Garver in 1990 and they have 7 children. Santorum started his political career when he was elected to Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district in 1990. Santorum was also later elected as a United States Senator in 1994, serving two terms. During that time, he wrote the Santorum Amendment that promotes the teaching of intelligent design. Before leaving the Senate, Santorum introduced the Workplace Religious Freedom Act with Senator John Kerry. Santorum is a social conservative and practicing Catholic who opposes same sex marriage and artificial birth control.
