SPC Science Night 2017

On October 20th, the Tarpon Springs Campus of St. Petersburg College held a night dedicated to science. People of all ages came together to witness thrilling science events and activities. Members from Lowry Park Zoo, Trinity Brownies troop 1106, and SPC students were kind enough to volunteer their time to show the community what science is really about.
As visitors arrived at 6:00pm, they could see the many science-related displays that were sitting outside of the library. Lowry Park Zoo sent two of their workers to show off several of their animals. These included, but were not limited to, Henry the Turtle, Sheldon the Albino Alligator, and Fluffy the Albino Burmese Python. The children were drawn to these tables, as they were able to pet the exotic animals.
One of the volunteers, who is a student at SPC, has her own channel on YouTube called “Paige’s Planet.” It is a channel where the community can find nearly fifty videos dedicated to “preserv[ing] conservation through arts education.” Throughout the night, Paige was playing some of her videos at her table, which attracted the attention of the crowd.
At another booth located outside the library, Foster’s Pet Store shared animals, such as a bird and other reptiles, that attendees of this event could interact with and purchase at one of their locations.
Inside the library were other science related booths, including a model of the inside of a human body, hosted by two science teachers. These booths were a very popular place throughout the night, especially by families who found it fascinating. Girl Scout Troop 1106 was extremely curious about the many intestines that exist in a human body. In addition, at each booth there was an object to interact with, whether it be bones, intestines, or a live animal. This kept the event interesting for not only the young children, but for the adults who attended, as well.
During the evening, two shows went on inside the library. A chemistry show was hosted by SPC science professor Michael Davis, with the help of his two students Lisa and Stephanie. During each of the shows, audiences were shown several experiments that were not too complicated for the younger members of the audience to understand. The demonstration really showed everyone how creative and exhilarating science experiments can be, and while performing the experiments, Prof. Davis entertained the crowd with jokes that kept the crowd laughing.
Overall, the night was a success, and hopefully, we can look forward to future community events like this one!
