
Men’s Basketball: SPC Titans versus Red Devil Academy

During the afternoon of November 4th , the St. Petersburg Titans took on Red Devil Academy at the Gibbs campus in St. Petersburg. The Red Devils traveled all the way from the opposite side of Florida from Daytona Beach. This was the Titans’ second game of the season after previously defeating Martinique National Team with a score of 112-27. The Titans looked to keep up the pace and defeat Red Devil Academy.
-Ring Ceremony
In the 2016-2017 season, the Titans were the FCCAA Basketball State Champions. This outstanding achievement allowed them to be awarded rings before the game started. Head Coach Ernest Crumbley Sr. handed out championship rings to the returning players and coaches from last year and acknowledged the players that transferred to different colleges. The President of St Petersburg College, Tonjua Williams, also gave a speech before the game. She talked about how proud she was of the team and their recent success. After the players were introduced, they got ready for tip off.
-Starting Lineup
The game was ready to start. The starting lineup for the Titans included #1 Isaiah Hammons, #5 Cannan Bartley, #10 Jalon Perry, #00 Glenn Miller, and #24 Aaron Jones.
-First Half
The tip-off was easily won by the 6’10 Aaron Jones of the Titans. The Titans looked to get off to a quick start, but their shots were not falling easily. On the other side, Davon Wiggins of Red Devil Academy started off hot from the 3 point line. Wiggins went 4-4 from deep as he looked to take down the 2016 champions. However, The Red Devils were in early foul trouble, which wasn’t good knowing they only had two players coming off the bench.
The Titans started off by getting most of their points from the free throw line, since their shots were not falling early. The Red Devils’ leading scorer, Davon Wiggins, had to be taken out early with 4 fouls with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. The Red Devils could not get good shots up from the great defense played by the Titans. On the offensive side, the Titans were rolling. The Titans were getting many open shots. With their defense, it led to easy fast break points.
-Halftime
At halftime, the SPC Titans were leading 57-25 and this game was looking like a blowout. Isaiah Hammons and Canaan Bartley had the hot hand in the first half and looked to carry it on into the second half.
-Second Half
The Titans kept up the great game in the second half. The backup freshman guard, Daniel Melvin, was scoring consistently and helped the team out tremendously from his bench role. The Red Devils had trouble offensively in the second half; they were unable to knock down shots and the ball kept getting stolen. At the end of the game, the final score was 107-51.
-End of Game/ Final Stats
The Titans were able to make their record 2-0 after a great team performance. The leading scorers for the Titans were Isaiah Hammons with 17 points, Daniel Melvin with 21 off the bench, and Travon Broadway with 15. The Titans dominated throughout the game and were able to prove why they won the FCCAA Basketball State Championship last yr.
