Movie Review: Big Hero 6

Any time the name Disney is associated with a movie, it’s instantly held to the high expectations of the movie corporation. By this, I mean they are expected to be one of the top grossing and top rated movies of the year. Disney expectations can also be summed up in one word: magical. When Disney teamed up with Marvel comics, fans had to find out if it would still live up to the world famous Disney brand. Fans were not disappointed.

Big Hero 6 is a Walt Disney animated film based on the Marvel Comics superheroes of the same name. It was released on November 7th, 2014,  in the United States.

The storyline of the movie centers around a young boy named Hiro and his inflatable robot health companion, Baymax. When Hiro loses someone he loves at the hands of another person, he sets out for revenge. Hiro transforms his friends, including Baymax, into a team of superheroes. What stands out about these superheroes is that they use their scientific and engineering strengths as their super powers. In this case, knowledge really is power!

This movie has a bit of everything. There’s crime-fighting action, emotional moments that will have viewers crying like a baby, and laugh out loud comedy. Plus, Baymax is basically an adorable, over-sized marshmallow (you just want to hug him—all the time).

The film has been nominated for a variety of awards including best-animated film at the 72nd annual Golden Globes and the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Critics Choice Awards). It will also be in the running for an Oscar at this year’s 87th Academy Awards ceremony, which will air on February 22nd.

Don’t allow the words Disney and animation fool you into thinking this film is only for children. No, this is a movie that can be appreciated by all ages. The association with Marvel also allows the movie to appeal to any superhero fan.

Directors Don Hall and Chris Williams created a captivating and hilarious movie by sharing the story of a young, intelligent boy, and his unusual, yet lovable best friend.

Big Hero 6 will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 25th.
