Movie Review: Unfriended

Unfriended is a horror movie like no other. It is written by Nelson Greaves and directed by Levan Gabriadze.  Unfriended gained popularity for its original premise. It is a movie that takes place entirely on a girl’s computer screen and is shown as “found footage”.  The film stars Shelley Hennig as one of six friends who find themselves terrorized online by an anonymous person. At first the friends thought the online user was pulling a prank on them until the user starts revealing the friends’ darkest secrets.

“I was on the edge of my seat for the full 90 minutes. The movie does a good job keeping the thrill alive for the entirety of the movie,” said Destinee Bullard, a sophomore at St. Petersburg College.

This anonymous person refers to themselves as Laura Barns, a girl who committed suicide a year prior due to cyber bullying. The group tried several failed attempts to get rid of the user on their group chat, but they could not. Thus, Laura Barns continued to terrorize the group and ultimately kills them for the pain they have caused her.

This film takes an interesting spin on cyber bullying. It opens the audience to the horror of teenage suicide and the pain the internet can inflict on others. Cyber bullying continues even after school hours and teenagers have no escape.

“I wasn’t scared at all during the movie, but I did find the message to be important,” said Kezra Leon, a sophomore at St. Petersburg College.

“This movie really opened up my eyes to how mean people can be to one another. I’ve always been mindful of the pictures I post of my friends, and I hope as a result of this movie, more people will be careful,” said Alija Bulbul, a frequent movie-goer.

This is a horror movie with a strong lesson. It is important to ask our friends if it is okay to tag them in a picture or to post a video of them. It is never okay to go behind their back and spread rumors and risqué pictures.

Unfriended has mixed to positive reviews from critics and movie fanatics. Director Levan Gabriadze has mentioned that he wants to do several follow-ups to the film and that there are plans for a direct sequel.  Until then, will you be mindful of what you post on the internet?
