Bernie Sanders’ political career began when he was elected as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981. Since then, Sanders has been a Representative, as well as a Senator. He was Vermont’s sole congressman in the House of Representatives for 16 years, a member of the Committee of Veterans Affairs.

Until he made his decision to run for president, he had not labeled himself as a member of the Democratic party. He was America’s longest-serving independent politician in Congress.

Before politics, Bernie Sanders had many jobs such as carpentry, and journalism, just to name a few. Born and raised in New York, Sanders’ education includes James Madison High School, Brooklyn College, and the University of Chicago. He currently resides in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane. Together they have four children and seven grandchildren.
