Poetry: An Ode to Coffee, the Student’s Savior
Out of the Sandbox June 14, 2015By Bailey Gumienny
The due dates are looming
Projects and papers piling up,
Yet I stand, head held high
with a double shot in my cup.
Formatting papers, line by line
Citing every source in MLA
Double space, 12 point font
and an iced Café latte.
Test day arrives
On a Monday no less,
After a sleepless Sunday all-nighter
I combine coffee and creamer;
the ultimate focus igniter.
Trembling hands holding number twos
Hoping for number one
In the blink of an eye and the tick of the clock
“Your test has just begun.”
I remembered the pencils and scantron
I managed to get here on time,
There’s nothing I can’t do
with caffeine by my side.
Pages flipping, mind racing,
Bubbling in A,B,C, or D
I scan the answers in desperation
Wishing I had more coffee.
Searching my mind for answers,
Heart racing with every new question,
My all-nighter study session is paying off
All thanks to caffeinated perfection.
Pencils down, the exam is over,
“Please let me get what I want:
A passing grade, a college degree
And a venti triple shot.”
A week later, grades are posted:
Success, an A in the class
All thanks to my mocha latte, I will find a way to pass.
