American Stage Presents Mamma Mia!
Arts & Entertainment May 7, 2019By Sofia Garcia
Summer is upon us and that means that we get to spend more time enjoying the beautiful nature around us. Art festivals, camps, and musicals, yes, you heard me, musicals, can be enjoyed outdoors. From April 10 – May 12, Saint Petersburg has had the honor to host the American Stage adaption of Mamma Mia, the smash hit feel-good musical. Located at Demens Landing Park, the magic of American Stage in the Park assembles the hit songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA, with uplifting classics like “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen”, and emotional songs like my personal favorite “Slipping Through My Fingers”.
I had to privilege to go to the show on April 18th, and let me tell you that it was one of the best nights of my life. As soon as you get to Demens Park, you are transported to the exotic Greek scenery. The volunteering staff will help you find your assigned seating área and guide you to the big Mamma Mia photo op, where you can gather with your friends and use the microphone props to take an iconic picture. You can also find all sorts of merch related to the show like Mamma Mia shirts, hats, and cups. The food stand has a variety of Greek-inspired dishes to get you into the full mood of the Kalokairi island.
The show follows a similar storyline as the original movie, but it includes some songs from the follow-up movie released in 2018. It includes songs like “Knowing Me, Knowing You” and “Fernando”. I spoke with Kaylie Horowitz, which is part of the Mamma Mia ensemble, and I asked her what does it feel like to be a part of such an iconic musical, to which she responded: “It’s so much fun! Every night feels like doing it for the first time all over again. Although it is tiring sometimes due to all the choreography and singing, we have the most fun while on stage”.
The last shows will run from Tuesday May 8th to Sunday May 12th from 8:00 pm to 10:00pm. So, if you are looking for something to do this upcoming weekend to welcome summertime, make sure to not miss this opportunity!
Pro tip: Stay for a little while longer after the show and the cast will come out to take some pictures, sign autographs and chat with you!
